I can't believe that we are halfway through 2010. Time passes too quickly. We get busy with the urgent and waste time on the trivial.
Now is the time to pull out those goals we made at the beginning of the year for ourselves (and possibly our firms). I am speaking to the majority of my readers because, come on now, I know you. You made goals for the year (at least) and some of you even wrote them down. So, how are you doing on reaching those goals? If you're anything like me, the answer is "Not so good, but ...."
We almost always rationalize away that which we don't succeed at. Sometimes those rationalizations are valid. Sickness. Divorce. Family issues. Employment issues. All valid reasons to follow the word "but" in the sentence above. However, for most of us, we just didn't keep our goals in front of us and didn't adjust them when necessary. We put them away in a drawer.
You've heard that people who write down their goals are more likely to achieve them than those who don't. Fine. I would add that you have to review them every day - something I don't do.
For those of us who haven't done so well on acheiving our goals for the first half of the year, let's start again. Find those goals, review them, and adjust them accordingly. Then keep them in a visible place.
For those of you who haven't gotten around to setting goals, take a look at an article I wrote earlier in the year entitled Keys to Growing Your Practice and then download the accompanying worksheet (an excel spreadsheet). That is a great place to get started!
Good luck!
